GHOTI HOOKE stock for every occasion About the Name The word 'Ghoti', for all those interested, is an alternative spelling to the word 'fish'. Not kidding. Think of it this way: 'GH' as in 'cough', 'O' as in 'women', and 'TI' as in 'nation'. The word was invented by George Bernard Shaw in the early 1900s to show how inconsistent the English language could be. Add the 'hooke' at the end (without the e) and what do you have? Fish hook.
